Viva La Liga El Tomasino!

Its that time of the year again... UAAP Season! Yay! On July 12, this year's host, the University of the East will be officially opening the 77th season. I am thrilled to have something worthwhile to watch on TV again. I would watch anything, actually, even re-runs of crime shows, soaps, or sit coms. No political news for me because it is so depressing.

Anyway.. I have to get my vocal chords ready for all the screaming I will be doing. Of course, I will be rooting for my Alma Mater, the University of Santo Tomas! I hope we bring home the trophy this year. (Fingers crossed!) My eldest son will be at all the games, beating the drums, getting the crowd all revved up, leading the cheer "Ganaremos Tigres El Campeon!" (Go Tigers, the Champions!)

My UST Yellow Jackets Drummer boy, Aton

Me and the center for the UST Tigers, Karim Abdul

I am writing this post to share with you my excitement. I am calling on all Thomasians worldwide to show your support to our Alma Mater this season. Go USTe, Go USTe, Go, go, go, go, GO USTe!!!

Asia's Mountain Roads

The Industrial Revolution has brought men to carve a route through mountains and cliffs to enable them to find work, sell produce and open trade relations with people on the other side of the mountain. With crude tools and meager resources, roads were cut through mountainsides for vehicles to pass through. Most of these mountain roads were built hundreds of years ago, some were rebuilt, others re-structured, while others still look the same as it did when it was first constructed.

Take a look at some of Asia's mountain roads. Awe-inspiring, jaw dropping and outrageously dangerous. No novice drivers in these areas please.

1. Karakoram Highway
The highest paved road in the world with an elevation of over 15,000 ft above sea level, the Karakoram Highway stretches from Kashgar in China's Xinjian Province in the North, all the way to Hasan Abdal, Punjab, Pakistan in the South. Its total length of 808 miles (557 miles in Pakistan and 251 miles in China) snakes along the Karakoram Mountain Range. Construction of this road took 20 years (1959-1979), with over a thousand workers losing their lives to landslides and falls. Officially opened to the public in 1986, this mountain road goes by many names - KKH (Karakoram Highway), N-15 (Pakistan) and G314 (China).

2. Halsema Highway (Baguio-Bontoc Road)
This 93 mile (150 km) mountain road located in Northern Luzon, Philippines is included in the list of the World's Most Dangerous Roads. At an elevation of 7,299 ft (2,225 meters) above sea level, the Halsema Highway is the highest altitude highway in the Philippines. During the Commonwealth, when the Philippines was under American rule, Eusebius Julius Halsema, an American Engineer and Mayor of Baguio City proposed this project to construct a road that would enable vegetable farmers to bring their crops into Baguio City. Unfortunately, the US government refused to fund the project forcing Halsema to seek the help of the local townsfolk. The tight hairpin turns, lack of guard rails in some areas are some of the factors that earned Halsema Highway a spot in the list of the World's Most Dangerous Roads. In this present time, despite rehabilitation efforts of the government, the slippery asphalt, thick fog, and the threat of rock falls, and landslides still pose a grave danger to motorists plying this route.

3. He Huan Shan Road
The east and west coast of the island of Taiwan is separated by a mountain range that runs from the north to the southern tip of the island. This was a hindrance to the movement of goods and people as they had to go around the mountains to get to the other side. The destruction of the Central Cross Island Highway in 1999 by a strong earthquake followed by a strong typhoon in 2004 rendered it to be closed indefinitely. At present, the He Huan Shan Road is the only access road connecting the province of Taichung (West-Central Taiwan) and Hualien (East-Central Taiwan). He Huan Shan Road is dangerously curvy, located 19,744 ft (3,275 meters) above sea level and winds around the narrow Taroko Gorge.

4. Rohtang Pass
Situated at a height of 13,051 ft (3,978 meters) above sea level, the Rohtang Pass in India is a dangerous road to take. Closed to traffic for several months in a year due to heavy snowfall, mudslides and rockfalls, the Rohtang Pass is exactly what its name represents. In the Bhoti dialect, "Rohtang" means "pile of corpses" due to the numerous deaths of people trying to cross the pass.

Rohtang is of economic and strategic importance to India because this road provides access to people in both sides of the Pir Panjal mountain range. Rich cash crops from the valleys are transported through this route to the business districts.

I would love to see the views from these mountainside roads. However, I don't think I have a heart that strong to travel there by road. Maybe when I get rich, I'd charter a helicopter and view it from the top. That would be an experience of a lifetime. Chalk that up to my bucket list!

Created With Love, Filled with Hope

I find fulfillment in sharing my time and talent to help others in need. We have brothers and sisters in other lands that are trying their best to make a living for themselves with the raw materials they have at hand. I applaud the people who support these livelihood projects and provide them a chance to market their products on a global scale.

This is exactly why I am supporting ApiHappi. This group of individuals are doing their best to support native residents of Sri Lanka who produce wonderful hand loom materials that they use to make trendy, stringy bags.

What exactly is hand loom? By definition, it is a manually operated apparatus used to create or weave fabric. Women in Sri Lanka use this to make an authentic piece of fabric that ApiHappi purchases. The designs and colors of the fabric the Sri Lankan women weave are just amazing!

The company, ApiHappi believes that providing the hand loomers with a steady income is better than charity. A market for their products would ensure a sustainable livelihood for Sri Lankan women. Another commendable project of ApiHappi is that they donate one (1) school bag to a child in rural Sri Lanka for every purchase of their product!

If you want to have a one of a kind stringy bag made from authentic hand loom fabric, make sure to check them out For only $29.99, you not only get the chance to own a cute, trendy bag, you also help bring livelihood to the women of Sri Lanka plus you get to help them donate a school bag to a child in the rural areas. Livelihood and support for education can go a long way.

They have also partnered with Cohado in Baltimore, Maryland to give the youth an opportunity to sell Sri Lankan products. They aim to create an east-west connection that would continually benefit both the local producers and their partners in Baltimore.

Click here to check out their website and grab this chance to support our drive to make this world a better place for everyone.

Love Knows No Boundaries

Recently, I have come across a very heartwarming video. It touched my soul and brought me to tears. It is a wedding video of a young couple. You may ask yourself, "What's so special about a wedding video?"

The location was in the Philippine General Hospital. Preparations were done in 12 hours. The couple had planned a wedding for July 8 however, they had to move it to an earlier date.

The reason? It was the groom's dying wish - to marry his girlfriend. Please watch this very touching short video.

Despite the circumstances, this couple showed so much love for each other that made me wish they'd have more time together in this world. They had their whole lives again of them, however, it was not supposed to be that way. On June 11, 2014, 10 hours after the wedding, the groom passed away. He was 29.

This video was a wake up call for me. That life is too short to spend it on worldly things. It taught me to value each and every sunrise and sunset, to love unconditionally, to share my blessings, to give thanks to the Lord for His Providence.

Never let a day pass without reassuring your family of your love for them. Hug them, kiss them, hold their hand.

Can't write much. I am crying again as I watch the video.

Wishing you all Peace, Love and Happiness.

Help Change Someone's Life Today And Make A Difference.

There is so much truth in the saying, "No man is an island." We are all dependent on each other in more ways than one. A farmer who grows crops for profit and for feeding his family depends on consumers who purchase his produce. An engineer who builds the tallest buildings depend on steel workers to provide him with the trusses he needs to complete his project. Children depend on their parents for love, guidance and sustenance, while parents depend on their children to help them fulfill their role in child rearing. Trivial facts but come to think of it, we are really depend on each other to survive.

In this modern world, we tend to be preoccupied with our needs and wants. It seems that we are living to make a living. This sometimes results to indifference towards our brothers in need. This is a sad reality that we see everyday.

Have you ever experienced being hopeless, helpless and fearful of what lies ahead? That feeling where you thought you'd never see another tomorrow? I have.

Let me tell you my story.

Years and years ago, my parents had purchased a nice piece of property in the outskirts of the city. It was a nice parcel of land, located on an incline, like a small hill. It was here where my parents planned to build their dream house. My mom was running a small catering business and we had some savings in the bank. We were not rich people. I would say we just had a little more than some families do.

It was the gloomiest day of my life when my dad announced that he has lung cancer. He was a doctor himself, which made it more difficult to convince him to seek treatment. We felt like we were struck by lightning. We had to adjust our lifestyle and let go of the things that we usually did together as a family. No more out of town vacations, no more Sunday restaurant dinners, no more new clothes and new shoes for some time. My dad's operation and treatment were more important than anything else.

My mom had to stop working to attend to my father's needs. We had no other option but to sell the land to pay for hospital costs. With our family's savings slowly dwindling away, we were starting to lose hope. I had a sibling in college, another in high school and still another sibling in grade school. It pained me to see my dad wasting away on his hospital bed, my poor siblings whose future is now uncertain, and my mom who stormed heaven with her prayers, crying every night.

Eventually, my dad succumbed to his illness. Whatever we had left was spent for his funeral service. The first few weeks were the most difficult. We decided to leave the house we were renting and save the money we pay for the rent. My mom mustered all her strength and asked her in-laws if we could stay with them until we were back on our feet again. It was against her principles because she knows that her in-laws did not approve of her when my dad married her.

Sometimes, in the strangest way, #unexpected joy and help comes your way. Not a little, but an outpouring of love and concern. My grandparents, great aunts and uncles took us in with open arms! They offered to have the old guest house remodeled so that we could have a place to stay. Cousins and uncles from the provinces came over and offered their services to rebuild the house. Soon enough, we had a little place we could call "home" once more.

My mom started from scratch and revived her small catering business. Her friends and relatives offered their help too. Some giving financial assistance, others offering their services for free. In a little over a year, we were back on our feet again. Little did we know that all we needed to do is simple - ASK.

No one can be so heartless to turn his/her back on a person who is ill, asking for financial assistance for the treatment of their disease. There are terminal patients who ask nothing else but to have their favorite dish, or go visit a place that brings them so much happy memories. Simple desires, simple wishes.

All we need to do is to ASK... then you come to the question - "Ask who?"

In an effort to alleviate the pain of suffering, a group of young adults came together and created GiveForward, a medical fundraising campaign to help make life a little easier for patients with cancer and other life-threatening or debilitating illness and/or injury.  They help raise funds to cover medical expenses by moving people. Their innovative strategy of information dissemination through social media maximizes the effort a hundred fold.

The program is simple. All that is needed is to create a fundraiser campaign with GiveForward, and share your story on social media. You will be assigned a personal coach to achieve your goal. It is social mobilization at its best. As of this day, GiveForward has already helped raise $107,737,000 towards medical expenses!

I wish there was something like this when my dad was sick. No regrets though. I can still do my part to help those in need. I joined GiveForward's Ambassador Program. I will make a difference in this world. With the help of friends and family, I know I will. You can too!

Don't just sit and watch your loved one suffer from an illness. Do your part. Get Moving. Share #unexpectedjoy. GiveForward. You'll be surprised at how many caring hearts are out there.

"And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." (Luke 11:9)

Health Foods: Fad or Fact?

In today's market, there are so many food, food supplements, or gadgets that claim to be health boosters, healing ingredients, or aids to extract essential nutrients.  Are they real? Or are they just a fad?

Here are 5 "new" things that are said to help us have a healthier life.

1. Infused Water.
Have you seen people lugging around a bottle of water with lemon slices in it? Well, this new thing called infused water is said to be healthy because of the added Vitamin C in your drinking water. However, this would not work for everybody. I tried this concoction for a few days but then it gave me too much acid in my stomach. I went back to drinking clean, cold water and got my Vitamin C from other sources instead. It started with lemon-infused water. Now, there are all sorts of infused water - orange, cucumber, mint, okra!

2. Juicing
I am a believer in food fiber and its healthy benefits. I eat a lot of whole fresh fruits and vegetables. Nowadays, a juicing machine is doing all the work for us. Pop in a few fruits, some vegetables, and you'll have a glass of the extract. Sometimes it may taste good, but sometimes it doesn't. I admire the technology and the convenience a juicing machine can provide. However, I personally prefer the pleasure of having those yummy vegetables and fruits in my mouth. I love the feel of the different textures and the burst of flavor they provide, something a drink from a juicing machine cannot give me.

3. Stevia
This is a newly discovered sugar substitute, extracted from the Stevia plant that grows in abundance in South America. Studies have shown that the extract is so potent that you only need a teaspoon of Stevia extract to have the same sweetness as a cup of granulated sugar. If Stevia extract would start to be commercially produced in large amounts, I wonder if diabetics like me could use it as a sweetener? I will wait and see.

4. Espresso Machines
People used to be content with a steaming hot cup of brewed coffee, however, the coffee industry has introduced other ways to enjoy the brew. Espresso machines are now a part of the household, a valued gadget in the kitchen. One can have creamy latte in a push of a button. Health benefits? You get your caffeine boost at any time you desire. No more trips to the coffee shop. Does it help us save on gas? I guess, but it can throw your budget off track because the mixes are not cheap. Health and convenience with a price.

5. Tea
Green, White, Yellow, Black. Oolong, Jasmine, Ginger, Seven Herbs, Chamomile. There is an endless list of available teas in the market that I have lost count. I get confused with all the claims of health benefits! One kind of tea for every ailment? I love tea, Period. I don't care what kind of plant the tea came from. I just love the aroma!

My Happy Rainbow

Working at night has made me miss out on a lot of things. But not yesterday! After such a long time, I saw a rainbow! It was so beautiful I could not resist but to take a picture of it. Pardon the crudeness of the photo, my hands may have been shaking with excitement. I felt like a child again, eyes wide with amazement, smiling from ear to ear.

One more reason to believe that God is always with us, bringing little miracles, and tons of happiness in things that we may have ignored for a long time.

Wishing you blessings of peace and contentment in your heart. Have a Happy Monday everyone.

Organic Jewelry: More Precious Than Gold

Yesterday, on my weekly trip to the market, I was upset the high prices of basic commodities. Rice prices increased by two pesos. The usual "Bulacan Super Sarap" variety that I get for Php 43.00 per kilo is now Php 45.00! My sons eat a lot of rice so the price really made me cringe.

Surprise, surprise! Garlic prices have not changed since it skyrocketed about three weeks ago. It remained at Php 300 per kilo. A Filipino without garlic in the kitchen is similar to a person on the verge of a manic attack. Garlic fried rice with no garlic? Pork adobo without garlic? No, no, no! I blindly picked 4 medium sized heads and had them weighed. Php 49.00! A little more than twelve pesos per head of garlic! I can't believe it is more expensive than pork! Wow.

And then came the need for ginger. I was planning to make Bicol Express for dinner. Cooking in coconut cream would need ginger. Guess what? A piece of ginger cost me Php 22.00! Another addition to the list of things more expensive than meat. Closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and paid the vendor.

I jokingly told my son that garlic and ginger are like gold nowadays. I told him, "I feel so rich today!" He frowned and said, "Why? Did you win the lotto?" I said, "No, I feel so rich because I have 4 heads of garlic!"

And so that was the inspiration for my "Organic Jewelry." Here are the pictures of my creations:

My ginger encrusted pearl bracelet

My necklace with 4 garlic heads as a pendant

My Bohemian-inspired charm bracelet. (Of course, the garlic was the charm)

So there you go, ladies. It is now acceptable to wear these kind of jewelry. Just be careful of robbers. They might snatch these precious gems away from you.

Have a happy Sunday, everyone!

What is a muscle car without #american racing wheels and rims?

Since the 1950's, american racing wheels and rims were the choice of  hot rod enthusiasts and it has been the same way since then. Its construction is so good that the manufacturer has provided a life time warranty on it. I love the look of their rims, but looks are secondary to the performance. Low pressure casting plus Aerospace grade aluminum are the what sets them above the rest.

My idea of a good investment is purchasing a set of these wheels. The Torq Thrust M Gloss Black with Machined Lip is my personal preference. The classic 5 spoke style looks good in classic muscle and sports cars. For me, a muscle car deserves nothing less.
