Why Your House is So Cold

It may be winter right now but that doesn't mean your house is supposed to be as cold as the outside world. You are supposed to be able to walk into your home after being outside for some time until it is comfortable and cozy. You are supposed to, and deserve to, feel warm. If you are feeling a chill in your home and you set your thermostat so that the heating comes on and you are toasty, but the room doesn't seem to get any warmer, there's a problem.

Whether it's speaking to a roofer to find out if there is a hole in the roof somewhere letting out all your heat, or you are going to speak to somebody about your boiler, you have to get to the root of the issue so that you know why your house is so cold. There's nothing quite as uncomfortable as feeling cold in the house that you are supposed to feel warm in, so we've put together some reasons why your home is so cold right now so that you can figure it out and get to the bottom of the problem.

1. You have a leak.

Most leaks are associated with water, but there is such a thing as a cold air leak. If you feel a drought, it's because there is an unsealed seal somewhere in your home and you need to get that fixed. The envelope is the physical barrier that can protect the inside and climate controlled environment from the outside weather, and to seal this envelope you need to go outside and clean any cracks and gaps around the windows. If you add a bead of acrylic or a polyurethane caulk, you'll be able to ensure that the leak is fixed.

2. Your heating system is inadequate.

You are supposed to be able to flick on the heating and know that every radiator in your home is warming up the place. If the home is two stories but you have just one heating and cooling system, then it's not going to work. You need to have two separate units to control essentially what amounts to two separate homes. Speak to a boiler expert to find out what kind of unit you currently have and then figure out if you can get that set up.

3. You need some more insulation.

Speaking to a roofer is a good idea here because they will be able to move into the roof space to figure out whether or not you need some insulation. If your insulation has degraded overtime in the attic, then the heat will be rising through the roof of your house. Making sure that you have either fiberglass or cellulose insulation is a very good idea. You need to also make sure that the sprayed foam has a high R value so that you can ensure that the attic is clean, clear and warm.

4. You skipped heater maintenance.

Every year you should have maintenance on your boiler's annual heaters. This will ensure that they are running to the correct capacity and you will be able to make sure that your boiler on your heating system is running efficiently. If you don't maintain the heater, it's going to get cold in your house.
