Love Knows No Boundaries

Recently, I have come across a very heartwarming video. It touched my soul and brought me to tears. It is a wedding video of a young couple. You may ask yourself, "What's so special about a wedding video?"

The location was in the Philippine General Hospital. Preparations were done in 12 hours. The couple had planned a wedding for July 8 however, they had to move it to an earlier date.

The reason? It was the groom's dying wish - to marry his girlfriend. Please watch this very touching short video.

Despite the circumstances, this couple showed so much love for each other that made me wish they'd have more time together in this world. They had their whole lives again of them, however, it was not supposed to be that way. On June 11, 2014, 10 hours after the wedding, the groom passed away. He was 29.

This video was a wake up call for me. That life is too short to spend it on worldly things. It taught me to value each and every sunrise and sunset, to love unconditionally, to share my blessings, to give thanks to the Lord for His Providence.

Never let a day pass without reassuring your family of your love for them. Hug them, kiss them, hold their hand.

Can't write much. I am crying again as I watch the video.

Wishing you all Peace, Love and Happiness.

Help Change Someone's Life Today And Make A Difference.

There is so much truth in the saying, "No man is an island." We are all dependent on each other in more ways than one. A farmer who grows crops for profit and for feeding his family depends on consumers who purchase his produce. An engineer who builds the tallest buildings depend on steel workers to provide him with the trusses he needs to complete his project. Children depend on their parents for love, guidance and sustenance, while parents depend on their children to help them fulfill their role in child rearing. Trivial facts but come to think of it, we are really depend on each other to survive.

In this modern world, we tend to be preoccupied with our needs and wants. It seems that we are living to make a living. This sometimes results to indifference towards our brothers in need. This is a sad reality that we see everyday.

Have you ever experienced being hopeless, helpless and fearful of what lies ahead? That feeling where you thought you'd never see another tomorrow? I have.

Let me tell you my story.

Years and years ago, my parents had purchased a nice piece of property in the outskirts of the city. It was a nice parcel of land, located on an incline, like a small hill. It was here where my parents planned to build their dream house. My mom was running a small catering business and we had some savings in the bank. We were not rich people. I would say we just had a little more than some families do.

It was the gloomiest day of my life when my dad announced that he has lung cancer. He was a doctor himself, which made it more difficult to convince him to seek treatment. We felt like we were struck by lightning. We had to adjust our lifestyle and let go of the things that we usually did together as a family. No more out of town vacations, no more Sunday restaurant dinners, no more new clothes and new shoes for some time. My dad's operation and treatment were more important than anything else.

My mom had to stop working to attend to my father's needs. We had no other option but to sell the land to pay for hospital costs. With our family's savings slowly dwindling away, we were starting to lose hope. I had a sibling in college, another in high school and still another sibling in grade school. It pained me to see my dad wasting away on his hospital bed, my poor siblings whose future is now uncertain, and my mom who stormed heaven with her prayers, crying every night.

Eventually, my dad succumbed to his illness. Whatever we had left was spent for his funeral service. The first few weeks were the most difficult. We decided to leave the house we were renting and save the money we pay for the rent. My mom mustered all her strength and asked her in-laws if we could stay with them until we were back on our feet again. It was against her principles because she knows that her in-laws did not approve of her when my dad married her.

Sometimes, in the strangest way, #unexpected joy and help comes your way. Not a little, but an outpouring of love and concern. My grandparents, great aunts and uncles took us in with open arms! They offered to have the old guest house remodeled so that we could have a place to stay. Cousins and uncles from the provinces came over and offered their services to rebuild the house. Soon enough, we had a little place we could call "home" once more.

My mom started from scratch and revived her small catering business. Her friends and relatives offered their help too. Some giving financial assistance, others offering their services for free. In a little over a year, we were back on our feet again. Little did we know that all we needed to do is simple - ASK.

No one can be so heartless to turn his/her back on a person who is ill, asking for financial assistance for the treatment of their disease. There are terminal patients who ask nothing else but to have their favorite dish, or go visit a place that brings them so much happy memories. Simple desires, simple wishes.

All we need to do is to ASK... then you come to the question - "Ask who?"

In an effort to alleviate the pain of suffering, a group of young adults came together and created GiveForward, a medical fundraising campaign to help make life a little easier for patients with cancer and other life-threatening or debilitating illness and/or injury.  They help raise funds to cover medical expenses by moving people. Their innovative strategy of information dissemination through social media maximizes the effort a hundred fold.

The program is simple. All that is needed is to create a fundraiser campaign with GiveForward, and share your story on social media. You will be assigned a personal coach to achieve your goal. It is social mobilization at its best. As of this day, GiveForward has already helped raise $107,737,000 towards medical expenses!

I wish there was something like this when my dad was sick. No regrets though. I can still do my part to help those in need. I joined GiveForward's Ambassador Program. I will make a difference in this world. With the help of friends and family, I know I will. You can too!

Don't just sit and watch your loved one suffer from an illness. Do your part. Get Moving. Share #unexpectedjoy. GiveForward. You'll be surprised at how many caring hearts are out there.

"And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." (Luke 11:9)

Health Foods: Fad or Fact?

In today's market, there are so many food, food supplements, or gadgets that claim to be health boosters, healing ingredients, or aids to extract essential nutrients.  Are they real? Or are they just a fad?

Here are 5 "new" things that are said to help us have a healthier life.

1. Infused Water.
Have you seen people lugging around a bottle of water with lemon slices in it? Well, this new thing called infused water is said to be healthy because of the added Vitamin C in your drinking water. However, this would not work for everybody. I tried this concoction for a few days but then it gave me too much acid in my stomach. I went back to drinking clean, cold water and got my Vitamin C from other sources instead. It started with lemon-infused water. Now, there are all sorts of infused water - orange, cucumber, mint, okra!

2. Juicing
I am a believer in food fiber and its healthy benefits. I eat a lot of whole fresh fruits and vegetables. Nowadays, a juicing machine is doing all the work for us. Pop in a few fruits, some vegetables, and you'll have a glass of the extract. Sometimes it may taste good, but sometimes it doesn't. I admire the technology and the convenience a juicing machine can provide. However, I personally prefer the pleasure of having those yummy vegetables and fruits in my mouth. I love the feel of the different textures and the burst of flavor they provide, something a drink from a juicing machine cannot give me.

3. Stevia
This is a newly discovered sugar substitute, extracted from the Stevia plant that grows in abundance in South America. Studies have shown that the extract is so potent that you only need a teaspoon of Stevia extract to have the same sweetness as a cup of granulated sugar. If Stevia extract would start to be commercially produced in large amounts, I wonder if diabetics like me could use it as a sweetener? I will wait and see.

4. Espresso Machines
People used to be content with a steaming hot cup of brewed coffee, however, the coffee industry has introduced other ways to enjoy the brew. Espresso machines are now a part of the household, a valued gadget in the kitchen. One can have creamy latte in a push of a button. Health benefits? You get your caffeine boost at any time you desire. No more trips to the coffee shop. Does it help us save on gas? I guess, but it can throw your budget off track because the mixes are not cheap. Health and convenience with a price.

5. Tea
Green, White, Yellow, Black. Oolong, Jasmine, Ginger, Seven Herbs, Chamomile. There is an endless list of available teas in the market that I have lost count. I get confused with all the claims of health benefits! One kind of tea for every ailment? I love tea, Period. I don't care what kind of plant the tea came from. I just love the aroma!

Have you read or any other new health boosting plant? Probably a new kitchen gadget that helps you get that nutrient you need? Share your story with me.

My Happy Rainbow

Working at night has made me miss out on a lot of things. But not yesterday! After such a long time, I saw a rainbow! It was so beautiful I could not resist but to take a picture of it. Pardon the crudeness of the photo, my hands may have been shaking with excitement. I felt like a child again, eyes wide with amazement, smiling from ear to ear.

One more reason to believe that God is always with us, bringing little miracles, and tons of happiness in things that we may have ignored for a long time.

Wishing you blessings of peace and contentment in your heart. Have a Happy Monday everyone.

Organic Jewelry: More Precious Than Gold

Yesterday, on my weekly trip to the market, I was upset the high prices of basic commodities. Rice prices increased by two pesos. The usual "Bulacan Super Sarap" variety that I get for Php 43.00 per kilo is now Php 45.00! My sons eat a lot of rice so the price really made me cringe.

Surprise, surprise! Garlic prices have not changed since it skyrocketed about three weeks ago. It remained at Php 300 per kilo. A Filipino without garlic in the kitchen is similar to a person on the verge of a manic attack. Garlic fried rice with no garlic? Pork adobo without garlic? No, no, no! I blindly picked 4 medium sized heads and had them weighed. Php 49.00! A little more than twelve pesos per head of garlic! I can't believe it is more expensive than pork! Wow.

And then came the need for ginger. I was planning to make Bicol Express for dinner. Cooking in coconut cream would need ginger. Guess what? A piece of ginger cost me Php 22.00! Another addition to the list of things more expensive than meat. Closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and paid the vendor.

I jokingly told my son that garlic and ginger are like gold nowadays. I told him, "I feel so rich today!" He frowned and said, "Why? Did you win the lotto?" I said, "No, I feel so rich because I have 4 heads of garlic!"

And so that was the inspiration for my "Organic Jewelry." Here are the pictures of my creations:

My ginger encrusted pearl bracelet

My necklace with 4 garlic heads as a pendant

My Bohemian-inspired charm bracelet. (Of course, the garlic was the charm)

So there you go, ladies. It is now acceptable to wear these kind of jewelry. Just be careful of robbers. They might snatch these precious gems away from you.

Have a happy Sunday, everyone!

What is a muscle car without #american racing wheels and rims?

Since the 1950's, american racing wheels and rims were the choice of  hot rod enthusiasts and it has been the same way since then. Its construction is so good that the manufacturer has provided a life time warranty on it. I love the look of their rims, but looks are secondary to the performance. Low pressure casting plus Aerospace grade aluminum are the what sets them above the rest.

My idea of a good investment is purchasing a set of these wheels. The Torq Thrust M Gloss Black with Machined Lip is my personal preference. The classic 5 spoke style looks good in classic muscle and sports cars. For me, a muscle car deserves nothing less.

Income Tax. Outcome Zilch.

In the Philippines, employees enjoy the convenience of having their income taxes automatically deducted from their pay. Their employers have the responsibility of filing and remitting these taxes to the Bureau of Internal Revenue. However, business owners and practicing professionals file their own taxes.

I have been a corporate slave for as long as I can remember and I did not mind having taxes deducted from my pay. However, with all the corruption and misappropriation of public funds, I easily get upset when I see how much money was taken off my bi-monthly wage. It is depressing to be giving so much to the government only to see wasteful spending, increasing poverty, and the depreciation of the Philippine Peso's purchasing power.

I would want to take for example the baranggay/village where I reside. There are vehicles plastered with signs "donated by Councilor XXX" or "Special Project by Congressman XXX." In our baranggay, we have one (1) Utility AUV, two (2) Toyota Tamaraw FXs, six (6) Patrol Tricycles, one (1) three-wheeled Utility Vehicle (modified large tricycle that can seat 8 people in the cab), one (1) small emergency fire truck and one (1) small AUV supposedly for the use of Senior Citizens. I have not seen any of those vehicles used by residents of the baranggay. They are used mostly by the elected officials.

The parking area for the Baranggay vehicles

A motorcycle with little water tank on a trailer

The small AUV for the Senior Citizens. Its been parked and unused for so long

The Senior Citizen AUV. Unused and parked on the side of the street. The tires are already flat.

I walked to the nearby Belarmino Sports Complex. This area used to be occupied by a public elementary school. It looked like an abandoned structure. I asked the guard on duty if I could take pictures of the building. He shooed me off, saying I should get a permit from the City Hall to take pictures of the place. I asked him if I could just stand outside the gate and take pictures. He started asking me questions about why would I need pictures of the building and who am I working for. I simply stated "I write, I blog and I am a taxpayer." The shooed me away even more. Nevertheless, I still pointed my camera lens through a slot in the gate and got some photos. Walking farther away from the complex, I spoke with an elderly man who owned a little corner store and asked him about the facility. Here's how our conversation went:

"Manong, gaano na po katagal dito itong sports complex na ito?"
("Sir, how long ago has this sports complex been built?")

"Apat na taon na. Hindi pa daw tapos kasi lalagyan pa daw ng basketball court at saka swimming pool. Di daw maasikaso kasi walang pondo."
("Its been 4 years. I heard its not yet complete because they plan to put a  basketball court and a swimming pool in there. They said they don't have funds to do it."

"Hindi ba po yan puede gamitin ng mga residente dito? Tulad po ng mga Senior Citizens?"
("Is this not available for use by the residents of this community? Like the Senior Citizens?")

"Ay, hindi. Para lang daw yan sa mga competition. Yung mga Arnis. Taekwondo. Gymnastics. Ganun. Para daw sa mga athletic competition lang daw yan."
("Oh, no. They said that sports complex is only for competitions. Like Arnis. Taekwondo. Gymnastics. Just that. I heard it is only to be used for athletic competitions.")

The gate of the Sports Complex

The front view of the complex

The grassy overgrowth on one side of the complex

The back of the complex. Hmm.. I wonder if the airconditioning units are turned on? Who is in there using up electricity if there are no competitions going on inside?

Got it. So that "thing" is only for athletic competitions. If it is true that they have top of the line facilities in there, why don't they use this structure to train the youth who have a potential in achieving worldwide recognition in athletics?

The next place I visited was the "Project 4 Park," commonly called "5K" because its area is 5000 square meters. It is here where my mom and her senior citizen friends go to every morning for their aerobics class. They use the multi-purpose covered court, however, it does not provide much shelter during rainy days. The park does not offer much shade. There are only a few trees and park benches (I think there's only 4). The only nice thing  in there is a playground for the kids. How can you call this a park when there's no place for you to sit and relax?

The arched gate to the park

The multi-purpose covered court

The playground

The rest of the park (Sorry, no park benches here)

To conclude, I only have one question.. Is this where my taxes go?

Essay Writing Is Easy

Photolink
The skill of creating a good essay needs to be developed early in the life of a student. From grade school to high school, students were required to come up with a paper about different topics, most of which they have no interest in. Free form essays are the best assignments because they are given the freedom to choose the topic to write.

Essay writing is something that has to be accomplished in all levels of education. However, not everybody welcomes the challenge. Most people feel more comfortable expressing their thoughts through speech rather than writing, while others have the interest and the motivation, however, time constraint is their major obstacle.

A college student may be faced with the dilemma of creating a good essay in one or two of the subjects he/she is enrolled in. More often, these assignments are on totally diverse topics and could easily cause the student to hit a mental block and lead to frustration. The first difficult task to face is to come up with an interesting topic sentence that would capture the reader’s attention. Should they get over this first hurdle, then they have to ensure that they do not stray away from the topic. The last obstacle would be how to end the essay. The final argument should support the topic sentence and this would be difficult if the body of the essay was not properly outlined and focused.

Living the life of a college student is an experiment in time management, a test of resiliency and a strong will to face up to the financial challenge. A small percentage of students do not have to work their way through college, however, this is an insignificant number compared to the percentage of those who are faced with the task of raising a family and earning a college degree at the same time. Juggling homework and housework is physically and emotionally taxing.  To write an essay while doing the laundry and making dinner for a family of four would compromise the quality of one or both tasks. This is the same for those who work two jobs and squeeze in college classes.

Since it is basically time constraint that limits these students to meet their academic requirements of writing an essay, online services for essay writing have gained popularity. Websites offering essay writing assistance charge a minimal fee and provide 24/7 customer support. They guarantee original, non-plagiarized work by certified writers with a PhD or MA degree in their specialized field. It is with this innovative service that college students who are struggling with making a living, or raising a family can avail of whenever they need assistance in meeting the deadline to turn in their essays, term papers, or dissertations.

Online essay writing services are the best thing that happened to students. They guide but not spoil. They workwith you, not for you. Avail of their services and they would make you feel that you did the job yourself.
