03 October 2015.

The yearly Cheerdance competition of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) was held in the Mall of Asia Arena. Total attendance to the event was over 25,000 students, parents, faculty and fans.

College sports is a big thing in the Philippines. The UAAP has eight teams, each representing the eight major universities. Another college sports league is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) where other colleges and small universities participate.

Going back to the UAAP, the highest number of fan turn-outs are Men's Basketball, Women's Volleyball and the Cheerdance competition. This year, for the 78th season, the Cheerdance competition has left a lot of fans in disbelief.

My Alma Mater, the University of Santo Tomas bagged a slot in the Top Three. Here is the reason I am writing this post. I would want to request you to watch these three videos.  Please comment below who you think won the 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place.

I am not going to receive any revenue for clicks on the videos. I just want to get honest feedback from others who are in no way associated with any of the universities that competed in this year's Cheerdance competition.

Thank you.

Here are the videos of the three universities who made it to the Top Three. Who do you think deserved to be crowned the champs?

University of the Philippines

National University

University of Santo Tomas

  1. I'm always so impressed with the athletic abilities of cheerleaders! I think if I got to judge, I would give first place to Salinggawi Dance Troup, 2nd place to NU Pep Squad, and 3rd to UP Pep Squad!

  2. All performed well, but I like the performances of UP and UST. They must have spent hours and hours of practice to perfect their moves.

  3. I am not the person to judge something like this but I did watch all three videos and I probably would have chosen the third squad (UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe). I know that you said that is your alma mater and I just want to say that is not why I chose them. They just seem to have the best routine and executed it the best.

  5. Okay so maybe this is not an entirely fair assessment because I honestly only watched the first 2 minutes of each video but here is my reasoning. Like a movie, if I am not entertained within the first minute or two - with a movie maybe the first 15 minutes - but with videos like this I give them a minute - if not interested I move on. To be fair I only watched the last video Santo Tomas the same amount of time. The first video Philippines sad to say but they were sloppy. They tried to do a lot of flips and stuff to wow the crowd and for most people that works but for someone who has a background in dance and cheer, I did not see tight moves, or uniformity. The second video - too many lifts which are nothing more than easy moves and crowd pleasers but they also used like 5 or so catchers where in the last video Santo Tomas they did not need so many catchers and their moves overall were tight, uniform, and cohesive. Granted they also did a lot more dance in the first minute or so than the other two groups who were more "cheer" so maybe that is why things were judged the way they were judged. I don't know and as I said I did not watch the entire videos however based on MY feelings, of ENTERTAINMENT value, execution, and how well they moved as a group, I would give 1st to Santo Tomas, 2nd to National, and 3rd to Philippines. My two cents. :)

  12. I love cheerleading competitions, I blame it on the fact that I want to try dancing for a team, just once. To experience it. Anyway, I think the Fighting Maroons deserved to be if not the champion, at least the 1st runner up title.

  14. While I appreciate the athleticism in being a cheerleader, I never really got why they have to wear those short skirts while the boys can wear pants.
